Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is the clear leader at the top of the scoring chart at the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament after his two-goal performance against world champions France in the final group game for Portugal in Group F known as the Group of Death at the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot either side of the half-time interval to take his tally to five goals at the tournament.  He has two more goals than any other player at the tournament which enters the last 16 stage this weekend.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opening goal of the game for the second successive group game when he tucked away the resulting penalty after France skipper and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had fouled midfielder Danilo Pereira in the box. France equalisedthrough a Karim Benzema penalty towards the end of the first half after Paris Saint Germain (PSG) attacker KylianMbappe was adjudged to have been fouled in the Portuguese box.

The equaliser from Real Madrid striker Benzema was his first since making a return to the national team squad this summer ahead of the Euro tournament after a six-year absence. His goal ensured that the two teams went into the break on level terms. Benzema then added his brace two minutes into the second half as he finished off the wonderful pass from Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba to give the world champions the lead for the first time in the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been the go-to man for Portugal over the course of the last decade and he came to his team’s rescue once again when he drew a handball from Sevilla defender Jules Kounde who started at right-back. He tucked away the resulting penalty to complete his brace and earn his team a 2-2 draw against the French team.

Portugal finished third in Group F with the point earned and will now face Belgium in the round of 16, while France finished at the top of the group to set-up a last 16 encounter with Switzerland.
